Sushi!

Hani has been posting a lot about upcoming events and wedding preparations. She's providing lots of good details so I won't interject, but let me say at least that thing are going very well and we're (finally!) moving in the right direction. I'm looking forward to this upcoming trip and of course to the wedding trip in June.

This short post is mostly to brag: I made sushi successfully!

I love sushi... I could eat it every day. I've had this dream of being able to make sushi, so that I could have it whenever I want. I don't care what kind it is or what style it is, I just love it all! So for a couple years I've wanted to learn how to make sushi.

For Christmas (at my suggestion) my sister got me a sushi-making kit. It comes with a mat (for rolling sushi), two little plates, two saucers, two pairs of chopsticks, and a little book that teaches how to make the rice, how to make the different styles of sushi, what ingredients go well together, and so on.

Today (yes, it took me three months to get up the courage to try it!) I tried my hand at making hand-rolled sushi (the one that looks like a cone). I made the rice, and while it was cooking and then cooling I chopped, sliced, and cooked all sorts of veggies to use: yellow squash, mushroom, eggplant, avocado, and carrot.

Then once the rice was done I started rolling: put the rice on the seaweed, press down to make a little indentation, add wasabi, add mushrooms, carrot, and avocado, then roll up and seal with a grain of rice. Then devour!

If I told you how many of these I made and immediately ate you'd call me a pig, so I won't! Looking at them on the plate it looks simple, but getting the rice right was kind of tricky. I intend to practice a lot more, especially with different things to put inside, and one day I'll use fish, eel, etc. as well. I want to make rolled sushi too, and now that I got my toes wet I think I'm going to be making sushi all the time!

Hani would be proud: I even cleaned up this huge mess after I finished!
